Treating Kids with OCD: CBT vs. SPACE
Sat, Oct 05
|Live Webinar
Supporting children, adolescents, and their parents is hard work. Exposure-based CBT is the gold standard, while SPACE offers promise as a complement to CBT or a replacement if the child or adolescent is not ready for change. This workshop offers an overview and comparison of both approaches.

About the event
Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is an effective treatment for children or teens with anxiety and OCD. While this treatment modality is highly efficacious, there are times when another approach is needed. Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE) has been found to be as effective as CBT in randomized controlled clinical trials. In this workshop, experts Ginny Fullerton, Ph.D. and Ivy Ruths, Ph.D. will discuss ways in which clinicians can guide parents to increase supportive responses to childhood anxiety, decrease accommodations, and establish boundaries based on the principles of SPACE. Presenters will provide an introduction to SPACE and highlight differences between SPACE and traditional CBT for child anxiety. Participants can expect to engage in role-playing scenarios and collaborative problem-solving for common challenges for parents new to SPACE and disruptive responses from their children adjusting to change.
Learning Objectives (Attendees will be able to):
- Describe the frameworks of CBT and SPACE.
- Guide parents in increasing supportive statements and moving away from critical or less supportive statements.
- Implement strategies for reducing parental accommodation.
- Combine SPACE tools with CBT to enhance outcomes.
